Li Bin, vice-chairwoman of the CPPCC National Committee, attended a consultative meeting on environmental protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, on Sept 3.

The meeting was the third one on the topic jointly held by CPPCC provincial committees of the nine provincial-level regions through which the Yellow River runs.

Li recognized the achievements these regions have made in protecting the environment of the basin including clarification of political responsibilities and an improved environmental compensation mechanism. She also noted the greater role of the CPPCC in protecting the basin.

Li stressed a systemic, overall and coordinated approach to the basin's environmental protection as well as development of industrial structures and life and work styles that will benefit the basin's eco-environment.

She also demanded multiple steps to nurture the water sources, coordinate local efforts, protect the mainstream and tributaries and conserve water.

In addition, involved regions are encouraged to promote their local characteristics, preserve their traditional cultures and explore new roads to high-quality development.

She also called for diligent implementation of the outline for environmental protection and high-quality development of the basin, requiring the establishment and improvement of mechanisms for environmental compensation, distribution and trading of water rights, rigid restrictions on water use, water price adjustments, accountability as well as relevant monitoring and evaluation.

After the meeting, Li led a team from the Committee of Population, Resources and Environment of the CPPCC National Committee on a survey of Yellow River protection in Lanzhou.
