Jiang Liping, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), emphasized the importance of systematic and sustainable ways to conduct cross-Straits communication.
Jiang, also director of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, said people-to-people exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan should focus on awareness of country and nation under the right guide, stay vigilant against agenda manipulation by Taiwan authorities that attempt to stir up division, and promptly resolve misunderstandings to boost mutual confidence.
Jiang said the COVID-19 pandemic and some political factors on the island have greatly affected exchanges on-site, which have caused some Taiwan residents to have increased concerns about attending such events.
In recognizing the progress and role of current people-to-people exchanges, Jiang said such exchanges are better undertaken through systematic and regular approaches so as to mitigate interruptions caused by various factors, provide an institutional guarantee and improve sustainability.
Jiang's suggestions included a focus on different themes, such as economy, culture, education, society and ecology, a clarification of the main players' duties and responsibilities, and constant efforts to improve the structure and mechanism guiding the exchanges. He said he believes such efforts will consolidate the results of exchanges and deepen the connection.
Jiang also called for efforts to put into practice various measures by the mainland, such as the 11 measures to support the development of Taiwan-funded enterprises and the 22 measures for the agriculture and forestry sectors.
Visits to the mainland by Taiwan compatriots will help them gain new ideas about the mainland's development and turn them into supporters of the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, according to Jiang.
