Hangzhou's Tonglu county was recently praised for its 2019 management work in rural sewage treatment.

In 2019, through strengthening organization structures, establishing guaranteed mechanisms and exploring innovative methods, Tonglu actively implemented various measures and made long-term management plans after a general survey of sewage treatment facilities in rural areas. It exceeded all the provincial and municipal targets for standardized operation and upgrading of its rural sewage treatment facilities.

Some 728 rural sewage treatment facilities in 126 administrative villages were upgraded during the past year.

Aiming to ensure both environmental protection and digital management, Tonglu integrated the upgrading work with the construction of beautiful villages with regional features.

With ripples of water droplets as a design element of the artificial wetlands in Huanxi village, a new water circulation system is set to convert sewage into available water for scenic environment use. The village and the system have welcomed over 70,000 curious visitors so far.

As Tonglu is in the last year of its three-year plan on rural sewage treatment, it has mapped out upgrades to 655 sewage facilities in 72 administrative villages in 2020. And it will keep on strengthening management to achieve standardized operation and truly realize one-time construction, long-term use, and continuing effectiveness. Other innovative works such as turning sludge into a useful resource and water recycling and reuse will be promoted, according to Li Yuehong, an official of Tonglu's housing bureau.
