Tonglu county in East China's Zhejiang province has been reaping dividends from a scenic spot upgrading program.
The county was in 2021 included in the program launched by the provincial government to upgrade scenic spots through micro renovations.
That same year, Tonglu spent 1.08 billion yuan ($166.15 million) to renovate over 350 projects of local scenic spots. This year, another 300 projects have been included in the program, and authorities plan to spend 1.45 billion yuan to upgrade these areas.
Yan Ziling Angling Terrace, a renowned scenic attraction in Tonglu, is among the beneficiaries of the program. This scenic spot now offers an immersive tour experience for visitors as it features actors who take on roles such as fishermen, scholars and woodcutters in 12 designated places. These actors would greet and interact with visitors, making them feel as if they are walking in the legendary Chinese painting Dwelling in Fuchun Mountains, which was created by master painter Huang Gongwang in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).
The Chuiyun Tongtian River Scenic Spot in the county has also benefited from the campaign - facilities including a cafe and a forest adventure park have been built in the national 4A scenic spot. In 2021, the area welcomed 350,000 tourists and generated over 40 million yuan in tourism revenue.
