The sub-district of Linping – located in Hangzhou city, capital of East China's Zhejiang province – was recently honored with the title of "The Hometown of Quyi" by the China Quyi Artists Association.
Quyi is a collection of storytelling, crosstalk and other spoken art forms and it has been developing in Linping for decades.
The predecessor of Linping sub-district was a millennium-old historical and cultural town that had a continuous development in commerce and trade. That made it prosperous in cultural and in literary activities, providing a solid foundation for the development of Quyi.
In the 1970s, public story telling emerged in Linping and in the 1990s story telling meetings at the square there became one of the well-known cultural activities in Hangzhou.
In recent years, Linping sub-district has seized the opportunities for urban renewal and has formed a "15-minute Quyi culture circle" with Quyi exchange centers as the core. This is supplemented by the local Lianhuazhou Theater, as well as community and school Quyi inheritance centers.
Over the years, it has nurtured a group of Quyi masters and numerous fine Quyi productions.
