Silk Road Science City: Xi’an’s core bearing area of science center and technology innovation center

At the two sessions of Shaanxi province in 2023, the provincial government work report showed that Xi'an had been approved to build a comprehensive science center and a technological innovation center.

Xi'an has become the fourth "dual center city" after Beijing, Shanghai, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

As an important node of the Xi'an science and technology innovation and Qinchuangyuan Platform's large platform for the transformation of high-energy scientific and technological achievements, the Silk Road Science City in Xi'an High-tech Zone has become the only "dual center" core bearing area.

Settles in Xi'an and leads Northwest China

The comprehensive national science center is an important platform for national competition in the field of science and technology, and also a basic platform for the construction of a national innovation system.

At present, China has five science and technology innovation centers, located in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, Chengdu-Chongqing, and Wuhan, and has four comprehensive national science centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hefei.

In November 2020, Shaanxi province officially proposed to "focus on promoting the construction of a comprehensive national science center in Xi'an". In March 2021, Xi'an clearly stated in the "14th Five-Year Plan and 2035 Long-term Goal Outline" that it would "create a comprehensive national science center and strive for more national strategic scientific and technological forces to deploy in Xi'an".

On November 24, 2022, the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology disclosed that Shaanxi "scientifically and efficiently allocates innovation resources, prepares and deploys a number of national innovation platforms, coordinates the construction of four major national science and technology infrastructure. The creation plan of the Xi'an Comprehensive National Science Center and Science and Technology Innovation Center has been submitted to the state."

The approval of the plan will not only improve the basic research capabilities and level of Xi'an, promote the upgrading of the industrial base and the modernization of the industrial chain, accelerate the transformation of scientific research results, and fill the "gap" in Northwest China, but will also be conducive to the development of China's scientific and technological power and high-level scientific and technological achievements.

Silk Road Science City carries the construction of "dual centers"

In the plan, the Silk Road Science City will take on the important task of building a regional science and technology innovation center and a comprehensive national science center in Xi'an.

The Silk Road Science City now has 9 national-level innovation platforms and 25 provincial-level innovation platforms.

The Silk Road Science City also arranges scientific platforms around large scientific installations. For example, the city maintains close contact with several scientific research institutions, such as the Xi'an Institute of Optics and Confidential Machinery of CAS and China Aeronautical Research Institute 618; gathers various innovative talents and scientific and technological achievements from Northwestern Polytechnical University and the Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology to provide innovative achievements, scientific and technological talents and carrier support for the development of high technology and the realization of industrialization.

After the establishment of the dual centers, the future Silk Road Science City, as the "Belt and Road" international scientific exchange center, will not only be the "Silk Road Science City" in Xi'an, the national "Silk Road Science City", but also the "Silk Road Science City" facing the world.
