The body of the ewer is decorated with a dancing scene. A male dancer in the middle is performing a huteng dance (the "barbarian whirling dance") to the music played by four  musicians holding different musical instruments.

The huteng dance was a folk dance endemic to the ancient Xiyu (west regions) and was popular in the Northern Dynasties (439-581), the Sui Dynasty (589-618) and the Tang Dynasty (618-907) after its introduction to the Central Plain.
