Originating in Shigu township, Xiangtan county in Central China's Hunan province, the Xiangtan oil-paper umbrella has a rich history of over 600 years and has found new life in the modern era.

As one of China's three main traditions of oil-paper umbrella craftsmanship, the Xiangtan umbrella is recognized as a provincial intangible cultural heritage item in Hunan.

The region's abundant bamboo, wood, and tung oil resources provide ideal conditions for umbrella production. Each umbrella is meticulously crafted through 84 detailed processes, blending functionality with artistry. It serves as both a practical tool for shielding people from the sun and rain, as well as a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.

In recent years, with the rise of China-chic, China's native fashion trends, the Xiangtan oil-paper umbrella has become a fashionable item, gaining popularity among young people and foreign tourists alike.

With government support, the Xiangtan oil-paper umbrella industry has transformed from small-scale workshops to mass production. With an annual output exceeding 15 million umbrellas, it accounts for two-thirds of the national production of craft umbrellas, with a market value surpassing 300 million yuan ($41.49 million). The rise of online sales and e-commerce platforms has also facilitated the global expansion of the industry.

The growth of the umbrella industry has spurred local economic development and breathed new life into rural vitalization. Approximately 70 percent of Shigu's population is now involved in umbrella production, forming a complete industrial chain. This industry has created thousands of new jobs, with over 1,000 created in 2024 alone, contributing significantly to the town's comprehensive vitalization.
