Originating in Shuangfeng county in Loudi, a city in Central China's Hunan province, Yongfeng Chili Sauce is renowned for its unique flavor and rich cultural legacy.
Dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), this chili sauce gained royal recognition during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) under Emperor Xianfeng, eventually becoming a prized imperial tribute. Today, it is recognized as a geographical indication product in China.
The sauce is made primarily from local red chili peppers and must undergo 29 intricate steps, resulting in its signature bright color, aromatic fragrance, and delicious taste. Known for its appetite-stimulating qualities, it is low in fat and sugar, and free of artificial colorants, making it highly popular among health-conscious consumers.
In 2009, Yongfeng Chili Sauce's traditional production methods were recognized as part of Hunan province's intangible cultural heritage. In 2022, it was included in the EU-China agreement on protection of geographical indications, marking its evolution into an international brand.
Under the leadership of Zhang Xiaoyan, founder of Xianghesen Sauce Industry Co, the sauce's production has been modernized with advanced technology, boosting efficiency, and expanding global reach. Today, Yongfeng Chili Sauce is exported to markets in Japan, the United States, Tanzania, and Canada.
With support from the local government, over 10 chili sauce enterprises have been established in Shuangfeng, creating a complete industrial chain. In 2023, the county's chili sauce production reached 20,000 metric tons, generating sales revenue of 1.2 billion yuan ($166.25 million).
Moving forward, Yongfeng Chili Sauce will focus on brand development, cultural promotion, and international expansion in order to further cementing its global presence.
