The Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge, built by the CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company, opened to traffic in Jinan, the capital city of East China's Shandong province, in January 2022.

The river-crossing bridge is the world's longest-span three-tower and self-anchored suspension bridge. It is an integral part of the major transport projects titled the "Three Bridges and One Tunnel" on the outskirts of Jinan and is also the 15th bridge across the Yellow River in Jinan.

The bridge is about 3,788 meters long, with its main section reaching about 1,332 meters long. It is also the widest bridge to cross the Yellow River, with a width of 61.7 meters.

Total investment in the bridge was about 6.3 billion yuan (US$868.5 million), with a total steel consumption of up to 114,000 tons, equivalent to the amount of 2.7 Bird's Nest stadiums. The steel used in the three towers alone is equal to that of two Eiffel Towers.

In 2023, the bridge was awarded the "China Steel Structure Gold Award".

"One Bridge, Multiple Functions" is also an important feature of the bridge. It is built in accordance with two-way eight-lane highway standards and people on both sides of the Yellow River can cross the bridge by car, bus, rail, bike or on foot.

The bridge also has reserved space in the middle to meet the needs of urban rail transit and served as a main urban road. The decision to design the bridge with such width was to efficiently utilize the transport resources of the Yellow River, reducing the scale of the project, saving construction costs, and striking a balance between landscape effects and traffic safety.

During construction, the project team actively followed a "dual optimization" management model. On the one hand, it has taken part in the in-depth design and come up with several proposals to make the design drawings more reasonable, economical and construction-friendly. On the other hand, it has further improved construction plans from the technical perspective to create more convenient construction conditions, enhance construction efficiency, effectively shorten the construction period, save construction costs and reduce the impact of construction activities on local ecological environment.

The construction workers have used recyclable materials, promoted industrialized construction, bolstered mechanical construction efficiency and the utilization rate of waste, and undertaken effective supervision of potential impact brought by relevant construction activities upon environmental conservation and soil protection, ensuring the full implementation of green construction practices.

The bridge was awarded with the second-star rating in the 2022 Green Construction Level Evaluation in the first batch of construction projects by the China Association of Construction Enterprise Management.

Operation of the bridge has played an important role in further improving regional transport network, expanding transport capacity and alleviating traffic congestion. It has also promoted the transformation of old growth drivers into new ones in the starting area, expanded urban development space, and advanced Jinan's economic development.

With "Mount Hua Memory" lighting theme and multiple sets of high-power floodlights on poles, the bridge has now become a new popular travel destination in Jinan. During important festivals, the bridge will also activate a special festive mode, with dynamic colors changing in accordance with festival atmosphere.
