Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge: A success of ferry-bridge conversion project in Sichuan
The Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge
Over the Chuanjiang River, a bridge resembling a steel dragon spans the river, connecting the town of Baimi in Hejiang county, Luzhou, Sichuan province, with the opposite bank's Lingang street. This is the Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge in Luzhou city.
In the past, people on both sides of the Yangtze River in Luzhou depended mostly on ferry to cross the river. However, the turbulent currents of the Chuanjiang River posed significant safety risks during ferry crossings.
In recent years, Luzhou has comprehensively implemented a pilot demonstration project of "ferry-bridge conversion," aiming to replace ferries with bridges on the Yangtze River.
The Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge is one of the examples of this initiative in the city of Luzhou.
On Sept 27, the Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge, built by China Communications Construction Co's Second Harbor Engineering Company, was completed and opened to traffic.
The once troubling ferry crossing is now a thing of the past.
The opening of the bridge has turned the two sides of the river into a thoroughfare, reducing the previous 40-minute detour to just 2 minutes, greatly easing travel for over 300,000 residents on both sides.
The Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge
The Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge has a total length of 1,513 meters. Since its construction began in January 2021, the builders have faced numerous challenges. Complex geological conditions, narrow construction sites, tight schedules and persistent high temperatures presented huge challenges.
The builders persevered on-site and delved into studying every detail for months. They also invited numerous renowned domestic experts to survey the site. After 240 days of repeated deliberation and testing, they successfully overcame the construction challenges of the pier under complex riverbed geological conditions, filling a gap in this field domestically and internationally. This achievement has laid a solid foundation for the future construction of bridge piers.
The completion of the Rongshan Yangtze River Bridge has further expanded and optimized the urban development space of Hejiang county, promoted regional economic cooperation and development, and helped Luzhou integrate into the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, facilitating the construction of a dual-city economic hub in the region.
