CHEC helps Saudi Arabia build first modern steel plant
The main earthwork for the preliminary phase of the Ras Al-Khair Port Steel Plant project in Saudi Arabia, constructed by China Harbour Engineering Co (CHEC), has recently been completed. The project is located within Ras Al Khafji – an industrial city and one of Saudi Arabia’s four special economic zones.

To address the challenge of ineffective groundwater drainage caused by the saline and soft soil conditions at the project site, the project team modified equipment on-site, which significantly improved construction efficiency, and represented the first successful application of the drainage consolidation method in Saudi Arabia.
Faced with construction difficulties during the earth backfilling process, the team deployed 35 trucks. At the height of construction, more than 300 pieces of equipment and over 400 Chinese and international workers operated around the clock. Their efforts transformed a desert depression into a solid industrial foundation elevated 3 meters above the original ground level.
