In an era where traditional values are often challenged, Xiaochang county in Xiaogan is leading a cultural renaissance by reviving the ancient tale of Meng Zong, a paragon of filial piety from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220).
This initiative aims to preserve and promote the inspiring story of Meng, whose legendary devotion to his mother has resonated through the ages.
Meng is celebrated for his steadfast filial devotion, epitomized in the famous story of a harsh winter when his sick mother longed for bamboo shoots. Despite the bitter cold, Meng ventured into the snow to fulfill her wish. Finding none, he wept in despair, and miraculously, his tears caused fresh bamboo shoots to sprout — an act of filial piety that restored his mother's health and left a lasting legacy.
To safeguard this tradition, Xiaochang authorities have adopted a comprehensive approach focused on education and media. This includes organizing workshops and lectures in schools, as well as producing various artistic works such as books, performances, and short films.
The county has also launched a series of initiatives emphasizing the importance of family values and ethics, including hosting parent-child activities.
