Yangdian dragon dance showcases centuries of folk artistry

Yangdian dragon dance is a time-honored traditional folk dance in Yangdian town, Xiaonan district, Xiaogan, originating from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). During the Lantern Festival each year, this activity is organized by local people, attracting a large number of participants and spectators and becoming a significant folk cultural event in the town.

After centuries of development, the folk dance has evolved into a complete performance, standing out at the local Lantern Festival temple fair.

The town has long been known as the "hometown of dragon lanterns", with over 120 on display. Every year on the 13th day of the first lunar month, decorated dragon lanterns from various villages are enshrined in front of incense altars for a solemn ceremony. Afterwards, hundreds of dragons gather for the temple fair, rolling and dancing, drawing thousands of onlookers.

This traditional activity embodies the vitality of folk art and carries people's yearning and pursuit of a better future. People pray for favorable weather, national peace and stability, and prosperity for all in the coming year. Yangdian dragon dance has been recognized as a provincial intangible cultural heritage since June 2011.
