Xiaogan folk songs celebrate love for life

The folk song themed on picking tea is a traditional  song and dance performance originating from Dougang town in Xiaonan district, Xiaogan city, with a history of over 300 years. Distinguished by its elegant melody, the performance features two characters – a sister-in-law and her younger sister – who sing and dance together. Their vivid portrayal of tea-picking scenes expresses their joy and appreciation for a fulfilling life.

The song originated from the local tea-growing tradition. During the Grain Rain period, women would sing folk songs while picking tea to boost morale, creating the region's distinctive tea-picking song.

With uplifting lyrics and graceful choreography, the piece has long been popular among locals. It was performed in Beijing and for troops stationed on the Fujian front as a cultural showcase during the 1950s. In May 2024, it was recognized as a representative project in the sixth batch of Xiaogan's intangible cultural heritage list.

Xiaogan folk songs preserve collective memory and serve as a spiritual force fostering cultural and social harmony in Xiaonan. Protecting and inheriting this intangible cultural heritage is crucial for strengthening regional identity and cultural confidence.
