Guyuan mountain trail offers runners history and spectacular scenery

The 2026 China Mountain Trail Open (Guyuan) and Liupan Mountain Trail Race kicked off on July 4 in Guyuan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The event featured two long‑distance races, with 128 runners competing in the 90‑kilometer race and 418 in the 50‑km race. Meanwhile, more than 1,500 runners took part across the 30-km and 15-km race categories.

Participants wound their way through forested hills and villages, enjoying the cool mountain air in a unique outdoor experience that blended athletic competition, revolutionary heritage, and local rural culture.

The race route passed Zhongzhuang Reservoir, Lianhua Valley, and Yangling village, with terrain ranging from flat rural roads to high‑altitude meadows. Alongside Guyuan's scenic summer landscapes, the course faithfully follows the historic path of the Long March, giving runners a unique blend of natural beauty and revolutionary history.

This year's event added a 90-km professional course alongside the existing 50-km, 30-km, and 15-km options, catering to all levels from elite runners to casual walkers. The 90-km race ended at the Liupan Mountain Long March Memorial Square, featuring diverse scenery and deep historical significance. Gear transport and shuttle services were provided.

One highlight of the race was the local food offered at aid stations. Steamed lamb, beef noodle soup, and local rice dishes let runners recharge while tasting Guyuan's home‑style cuisine.
