Confucius Museum bridges ancient wisdom, modern technology

The Confucius Museum in Qufu, Shandong, is harnessing cutting-edge technology to bring ancient Confucian wisdom to life, creating immersive experiences that resonate with modern audiences.

One of the museum's most popular attractions is the Master Confucius Q&A interactive screen, where visitors can pose questions to a digital Confucius and receive responses drawn from The Analects —paired with contemporary interpretations that connect classical teachings to everyday life.

Another thought-provoking installation is the "Confucius and the tilting vessel" experiential area. The vessel, an ancient water container, tilts when empty, balances when half-full, and overturns when filled to the brim.

Visitors can pour water into a replica, grasping firsthand the timeless lesson that "pride leads to loss, while humility brings benefit".

During holidays, the ritual music performances staged by the museum's ensemble draw full houses. Featuring instruments such as bianzhong, or bronze chime bells, and paixiao, or bamboo panpipe, the repertoire ranges from The Book of Songs to Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) Yuefu music and Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) ceremonial compositions.

The performances are interspersed with instrument demonstrations and audience participation, offering an immersive journey into China's ritual music heritage.

Committed to its role as "a museum without walls", the Confucius Museum has developed a distinctive educational model that integrates cultural relics, digital technology, hands-on experiences, and social outreach.

On-site, visitors can engage in intangible cultural heritage activities at spaces like the weaving workshop, the bookstore, and the pastry studio, while the "Confucius code" themed study program serves over 10,000 students a year.

Through its Confucius cultural digital center and online digital resource platform, the museum also offers virtual exhibitions, allowing global audiences to explore its treasures and appreciate traditional Chinese culture from afar.
