Pavement construction commences on high-chainage section of Kenya's Garissa-Isiolo Highway
The A10 Garissa-Isiolo Highway in Kenya, contracted by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), has reached a key milestone: surface dressing commenced on the Kinna-Kulamawe section (DK448-DK470), marking the full transition of the high-chainage portion to pavement construction.
The 160-kilometer highway in northeastern Kenya is a key component of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor. Once completed, it will improve transport links between Lamu Port and northern Kenya, extend the port's economic reach into landlocked neighboring countries such as South Sudan and Ethiopia, and facilitate cross-border trade.
The extended construction frontage poses challenges in local materials supply, resource organization and external coordination. The contractor dynamically optimized the allocation of personnel, equipment and materials, promoted local employment and local sourcing of materials, and maintained strict safety, quality and cost controls, while keeping regular communication with local authorities, communities and relevant institutions.
To date, 4.23 million cubic meters of subgrade fill, or approximately 77.2 percent of the total, have been completed, along with 152 culverts and 31 km of surface dressing. The project has now shifted from primarily subgrade construction to simultaneous subgrade and pavement work.
