The project has raised power transmission capacity between the two regions from 6.3 million kilowatts to more than 9 million kW, strengthening power supplies and supporting Shaanxi's green energy transition.
The 1,271-kilometer project runs from Shuofang 750-kV substation in Shenmu to Bailuyuan 750-kV substation in Lantian county. With an investment of about 7.1 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), it was completed in 22 months after construction began in August 2024.
The project is expected to replace 7 million metric tons of coal consumption, cut carbon dioxide emissions by 14 million tons annually, and increase capacity to accommodate renewable energy.
It also serves as a demonstration project for domestic high-end power equipment, with domestically produced closing resistors used for the first time in China at the 750-kV voltage level.
The project spans 18 counties and districts across four cities. Once operational, it will enable northern Shaanxi's renewable energy bases to transmit an additional 18 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and deliver more than 3 million kW of clean power to central and eastern China.
