Shaanxi strengthens power grid for green transition
Shaanxi province's installed renewable energy capacity had reached 65.12 million kilowatts by the end of 2025, accounting for more than half of its total power capacity and surpassing thermal power for the first time, as the province accelerates the development of a more reliable and sustainable power system.
Over the past five years, Shaanxi's total installed power capacity has risen from 72.75 million kW in 2020 to 127 million kW. The province invested 120 billion yuan ($17.9 billion) in grid construction to strengthen electricity supply and increase transmission capacity.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), Shaanxi added 39.82 million kW of wind and solar capacity, accounting for 72.9 percent of its newly installed power capacity. It also upgraded more than 38 million kW of coal-fired power capacity to improve energy efficiency and operational flexibility, while bringing its first pumped-storage and new energy storage power stations into operation.
In February 2026, a new 750-kilovolt transmission link between northern Shaanxi and the Guanzhong region was completed, increasing transmission capacity between the two areas from 6.1 million kW to more than 10 million kW.
The province's outbound electricity transmission exceeded 100 billion kilowatt-hours for the first time in 2025, making it the sixth provincial-level region in China to reach the milestone.
During the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) period, Shaanxi plans to further expand its power grid and renewable energy capacity while ensuring a stable electricity supply.
