CHEC builds on-site safety controls at Simandou Port
The China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) is carrying out the ground improvement project at Guinea's Simandou Port.
Construction includes high-risk activities such as lifting, working at height, temporary power, and tropical disease control. In line with Rio Tinto standards, the project team developed 28 risk registers with hazards, controls, responsible staff members, and emergency plans.
A five-step risk management framework guides pre-shift briefings, and permit-to-work procedures govern high-hazard tasks. Briefing compliance hits 100 percent, and unsafe acts have dropped by more than 50 percent.
Supervisors verify safety controls via Rio Tinto's CCV App, with closed-loop tracking for identified hazards. The team completed over 5,000 critical risk verifications and identified 130 hazards this year.
Incentives and daily risk-sharing sessions encourage frontline staff members to spot risks. This system enables proactive safety oversight across the worksite.
