BIT postdoctoral fellow Madiha Rasheed awarded Women in Space Award

Recently, the International Conference on Application of Space Science and Technology was held in Islamabad, Pakistan. Dr. Madiha Rasheed, a postdoctoral fellow from Professor Deng Yulin's team at the School of Medical Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), stood out among global candidates to win the Women in Space Award.

This award presented by prestigious organizations like the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission and the Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad, recognizes female scientists for their outstanding contributions to space exploration and technology research.

Dr. Madiha Rasheed's success is closely tied to her research team. Professor Deng Yulin's team has been dedicated to aerospace biology and biomedical engineering, achieving significant results in space biomedical payload technology and space life information detection technology.

Their "microfluidic chip gene amplification device" was aboard the Shenzhou-8 spacecraft, enabling the amplification and in-orbit detection of nine genes, pioneering gene experiments in space for China. In 2017, the team’s scientific payload which studied DNA mismatch patterns in PCR reactions under space conditions, was sent to the International Space Station aboard the US "Dragon" cargo spacecraft. This marked the first entirely Chinese-designed scientific experiment to reach the ISS, showcasing the innovative prowess of Chinese scientists.

With the completion of the Chinese space station, the team's research capabilities have been further demonstrated. Currently, three innovative experimental payloads and more experimental projects developed by the team are operating steadily on China's space station.
