Qingdao Port of Shandong Port Group (SPG) hit a record high in the number of containers being handled for a single vessel. On Nov 16, 22,247 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) were loaded and unloaded at the berth of the MSC AMBRA at Qingdao Port in Qingdao, Shandong province. The terminal took only 12 days to pass the loading and unloading record of 20,047 TEUs set by the MSC NELA Nov 3.

Relying on the advantages brought about by SPG's reform of port-industry-city integration, the shipping network, with Qingdao Port as the hub, is gathering steam. The preeminent position of Qingdao Port as a freight hub for Northeast Asia has been increasingly reinforced, enabling its container business to step into the era of handling mega-ships with a total capacity of 24,000 TEUs. Now, it has become a new normal for Qingdao Port to load and unload over 10,000 TEUs for a single vessel.

From January to October, Qingdao Port handled 276 vessels of over 18,000 TEUs, an increase of 5.3 percent year-on-year. The number of vessels that loaded and unloaded over 10,000 TEUs at ports grew by 27 percent year-on-year. Qingdao Port has taken advantage of this momentum to forge ahead, using concrete efforts to help SPG build world-class seaports.
