The 4th Global Trade and Container Shipping Conference and the China Shipping 50-person Forum -- jointly sponsored by China Shipowners' Association, the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, the China Shipping Gazette and Shandong Port Group – or SPG -- kicked off in Qingdao on Dec 3.

The organizers said the event, in the port city of Qingdao in East China's Shandong province, had as its theme "Crisis and New Opportunities, Changes and the New Situation".

It attracted more than 400 participants across the country who shared their views on tapping into new opportunities brought about by the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership – or RCEP -- agreement in Beijing on Nov 15, between the ASEAN bloc of countries and China.

Top ASEAN officials have said the agreement will take commerce and trade between the two sides to a new level.

Event participants also shared their views on new development patterns -- in a bid to jointly smooth industrial and logistics chains, as well as promote the shipping and logistics industry.

In a keynote speech delivered to the event, Huo Gaoyuan, Party secretary and chairman of SPG, said that the successful signing of the RCEP had provided huge opportunities for imports and exports between China and the 14 Asia-Pacific member countries.

He said that looking ahead, SPG would work with other ports, shipping firms and partners to contribute greater efforts in smoothing the global logistics channel and promoting the ports and shipping industry.
