During the recent May Day holiday, the Shandong Port Group – or SPG, one of the biggest port operators in the world, based in East China's port city of Qingdao – reportedly handled a total of 20.03 million tons of cargo, an increase of 16.1 percent year-on-year.

It also moved 442,000 TEUs – or twenty-foot equivalent units of containers – an increase of 15.6 percent year-on-year and by doing so, it helped celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China with double-digit growth.

Sets new production records

In the container sector, Qingdao Port reportedly set a new international vessel productivity level of 348 moves per hour during the break, with the handling of the Danish-operated container ship the MADISON MAERSK. To top it off, the port hit a new handling record of 22,510 TEUs amid a single night shift.

In the oil sector, Qingdao Port set two new records on May 4, with a total of nine trains being handled and the average unloading efficiency of the oil tanker MARBAT reaching 16,000 cubic meters for a single vessel. Rizhao Port delivered a total of 510,000 tons of oil during the break, up 5 percent compared with the same period last year.

In the dry bulk sector, Qingdao Port's transportation of ore products also posted several records – moving a total of 808 carriages in a single shift and 2,140 carriages during a day. On May 1, Rizhao Port unloaded a total of 1,076 carriages of coal, equaling the record for coal unloading in a single shift. In addition, the Guangli port area of Bohai Bay Port's Doingying Port set a record for the exports of bulk cargo.

New business witnesses several highlights

Qingdao Port provided hot berthing services for vessels docking at the terminals, which significantly reduced the interval of vessels arriving and departing from the same facility. Meanwhile, Yantai Port offered whole-process logistics services for grain, with the first 5,000 tons of grain – or 200 TEUs – transferring to Weifang Port. In addition, the first foreign trade vessel Jin Zhu carrying desulfuration gypsum arrived at Weifang Port, transporting 5,000 tons of desulfuration gypsum to South Korea. This marked the official launch of the service for transporting foreign trade desulfuration gypsum from Weifang Port.

New services achieve strong results

The handling operations for the vessel Emirates WAFA – docking at the Qingdao Port Fully Automated Container Terminal – was two hours behind the schedule during the break due to technical reasons. However, by leveraging its advanced technology, the automated terminal enabled the ship to depart from the port one hour in advance, ensuring it would meet its timetable.

Focusing on a shortage of berths, Rizhao Port fine-tuned the balance of its berth facilities, handling a total of 12 coal vessels during the holiday. In the event, it loaded 236,000 tons of coal, effectively easing the port congestion problem.

Yantai Port on May 2 completed the handling operations for the vessel MARAN ATLAS's maiden voyage, with the ship carrying 64,673 tons of asphalt mixture. Furthermore, the port strengthened its connections with its fertilizer clients, improving its connectivity in all respects. The performance reportedly fully demonstrated the facility's reputation as an efficient port.
