On Aug 25, Shandong Harbor Engineering Group Co Ltd, a unit of Shandong Port Group, or SPG – based in the port city of Qingdao in East China's Shandong province – won special-grade general construction contracting qualifications for port and channel engineering, as well as first-grade class A design qualifications for the water transport industry.

This was understood to be the first time a port and waterways engineering company had won the qualifications in Shandong province and it was the 16th qualified company in the field in China.  

The unit has reportedly rapidly developed and expanded in the wake of parent company SPG's integration reforms. The SPG unit has integrated six ports construction companies across five port cities and with a registered capital of 1.9 billion yuan ($290 million) and total assets of 9.5 billion yuan, its annual output value has exceeded 7 billion yuan for five years in a row.

Benefitting from SPG's top reputation, Shandong Harbor Engineering Group has shifted its business from within the sphere of SPG's operations to other ports. It has established strategic partnerships with a few centrally administrated State-owned enterprises, such as China State Construction Engineering Group and China Railway Engineering Group.
