The Shandong Port Group or SPG – one of the biggest port operators in the world, based in Qingdao city in East China's Shandong province – was recently recognized at an awards event for being one of the "Shandong social responsibility enterprises", according to local media reports on Dec 21.

Huo Gaoyuan, SPG's Party secretary and chairman, won the title of "Shandong Social Responsibility Entrepreneur".

The ports group has ramped up its efforts, since its establishment in August 2019, to expand its shipping business as well as launch R&D projects to advance China's domestic maritime high-end technology.

An automated container terminal employing hydrogen energy and 5G technology, developed by SPG in 2019, is said to represent the future trend of operating ports using highly efficient and eco-friendly functionality.

Focusing on fulfilling its responsibilities as a State-owned enterprise, the ports group has contributed nearly 10 billion yuan ($ 1.57 billion) in taxes and created more than 2,600 new jobs since its establishment.

The awards event also applied big data technology to rate the social, economic and environmental contributions of enterprises and entrepreneurs in Shandong.

On the basis of data assignments, online voting, professional evaluation and publicity activities, 83 "Shandong social responsibility enterprises" and 10 "Shandong Social responsibility entrepreneurs" made it onto the list.
