SM MUMBAI, a vessel owned by SM Line - a global shipping company, left Qingdao Port in Shandong province on May 31. It marked the opening of SM Line's first direct shipping route to the west coast of the United States from Qingdao Port.

The shipping route is exclusively operated by SM Line, which has invested in six 4,500-to-5,000-TEU vessels to provide weekly express shipping services between China's main ports and ports on the the west coast of the US. The direct shipping service only takes 20 days.

Though the global port and shipping industry has been hit hard by the impacts of COVID-19 and geopolitics, Qingdao Port of Shandong Port Group has striven to develop its shipping routes at a record high speed, as well as continued efforts to expand the network of ocean-going routes for Shandong Port and enhance the port's role as a world transport hub.

Under the support of the local government, customs, maritime and frontier inspection authorities, Qingdao Port will take advantage of the reconstruction period of the global industrial and supply chain, to speed up the construction of Northeast Asia's international shipping center, guarantee the stability of its industrial chain, and support the quality development of Shandong Port.
