Water security for 7.91 million rural people achieved

Rural residents in Zhejiang's mountainous regions used to suffer from water shortage during drought seasons and muddy water during rainy seasons. Today, however, many rural residents have reliable sources of drinking water due to the government's persistent efforts.

The government's efforts to raise drinking water standards in rural areas have benefitted a total of 7.91 million villagers, who once harbored concerns about water sanitation.

At the entrance to a water supply station in Shanchuan township in Anji county is a water pool that houses around a dozen fish and several aquatic plants. According to the person in charge of the station, the pool is not just for sightseeing, but also for monitoring water quality, as it is connected with a nearby water reservoir. Thus, the health of the fish and aquatic plants reflects the quality of drinking water being supplied to local villagers.

Drinking water safety is an important part of rural revitalization. For example, Mogan Mountain in Deqing county, which has seen booming homestay tourism in recent years and has attracted a great many tourists from across the Yangtze River Delta region, once suffered from unstable hydraulic pressure and low-quality tap water at its local homestay hotels, significantly affecting tourism.

Chen Liqian, general manager of a local water plant, said that local tourism has been increased since every homestay was equipped with a reliable water supply after the government's efforts to integrate the water supply for rural and urban areas.

Zhejiang has listed drinking water supply in rural areas as one of its top 10 priorities in serving the public for the past two years.
