East China's Zhejiang province recently launched a campaign to encourage the public to travel in a more eco-friendly manner so as to reduce reliance on cars.

Eight cities, including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Jiaxing, and Huzhou, are included in the campaign.

At least 60 percent of these pilot cities are expected to see more than 70 percent of people travelling in an environmentally friendly manner by 2022. They also hope to exceed an 80 percent service satisfaction rate for green transportation, according to an action plan unveiled by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Transportation and the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

The pilot cities are required to institute relevant mechanisms and improve infrastructure for things like walking and cycling, as well as build charging facilities for purely electric vehicles.

By 2022, buses powered by new and clean energy in new urban areas in these cities are expected to account for more than 80 percent of all buses, according to the plan.

In addition, intelligent services on public transport will be further optimized and travel will be made more convenient.

Mobile phone apps and electronic bus signs will also be fully implemented to provide information and services related to buses. Non-cash payment services such as all-in-one cards and mobile payment will also be fully applied to public transport by 2022.
