The municipal bureau of commerce of Shaoxing announced a significant rise in consumer spending, according to Tide News on June 28.

In the first five months of this year, Shaoxing's total retail sales of consumer goods reached 121.6 billion yuan ($16.73 billion), a 10.7 percent increase year-on-year, leading the province.

During the Chinese New Year holiday, the city's sample catering enterprises saw a 46.3 percent increase in revenue compared to last year, with a total of 3.13 million tourists, marking a 33.4 percent rise. Both product consumption and online retail showed strong growth.

"High popularity, a thriving market, and strong purchasing power are the current highlights of consumer spending, mainly reflected in the rapid growth of the catering, shopping, and tourism sectors," stated an authority from the municipal bureau of commerce.

The official attributed this surge to emerging consumption scenarios and new business models, which have invigorated Shaoxing's consumer market.

Starting in May, Shaoxing launched a trade-in campaign for automobiles, home appliances, and home furnishings. Throughout the year, the city plans to host over 30 large-scale events, including major car shows, rural automobile promotions, and home appliance expos.
