Zhoushan's new materials sector thriving

Updated : 2024-05-15 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The new materials industry in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province is experiencing a significant surge, with construction on related projects worth over 200 billion yuan ($27.69 billion) currently underway.

This remarkable performance can be largely attributed to a series of proactive measures taken by local authorities, including encouraging enterprises to innovate and overcome technological barriers, issuing favorable policies, and enhancing government services.

Zhejiang Sugar Energy Technology Co, located in Daishan county, Zhoushan, has achieved a major breakthrough in mastering the key technology for the continuous production of thousand-ton 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, reaching an internationally advanced level.

This new material has the potential to replace fossil-based products like benzene and formaldehyde, as highlighted by Zhang Jian, founder of Sugar Energy.

Zhoushan has established a system with green petrochemicals at its core, fostering the collaborative development of downstream industries such as new energy materials, electronic materials, and structural materials.

Local authorities have implemented various measures to optimize the business environment. These include facilitating enterprise participation in promotional events, attracting top-tier talent, and providing guidance on digital transformation.

Furthermore, the local government is dedicated to building a comprehensive industrial chain by establishing industrial parks that house both upstream and downstream new materials enterprises.

Several high-tech enterprises specializing in electronic new materials and new energy materials, such as Solartron, have been introduced as part of this initiative.
