Zhoushan in Zhejiang province has made significant strides in ecological and environmental protection, resulting in an increasing number of rare and endangered species within the city.

Since the official launch of a comprehensive terrestrial biological baseline survey in the city's Dinghai district at the end of 2022, 24 new species have been discovered as of April this year.

Of these, two are firsts for Zhejiang province. The survey has identified a total of 3,189 species, providing a clearer understanding of the city's biodiversity.

In addition, the city's Putuo district initiated its terrestrial biodiversity baseline survey in 2021, with a total of 2,980 terrestrial species recorded, including one global first, 28 firsts for China, and over 100 firsts for Zhejiang province.

Zhoushan's unique geographical location and diverse climate have nurtured a variety of biological communities, and the city will sustain efforts to protect its marine ecological environment, noted a local official.
