Technology upgrades mussel production in Zhoushan

Updated : 2025-12-12 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Technology-driven upgrades are reshaping marine aquaculture in Shengsi county, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province. In recent years, the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences has strengthened both the innovation and industrial chains, injecting new momentum into the county, long known for mussel production.

Marine aquaculture is a pillar industry in Shengsi, with 36,000 mu (2,400 hectares) of farming areas, of which mussels account for nearly 95.7 percent. Local enterprises note that although natural resources are abundant, weak technology and a short industrial chain have long constrained growth. To address these challenges, the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences has advanced a technology-driven model for rural vitalization.

This year, the impact is clear in Shengsi's processing facilities: automated mussel seeding machines have increased mechanization; steam cooking and freshness-locking techniques preserve the original flavor; and low-salt processing, paired with hurdle sterilization, enables additive-free prepared products.

A newly launched production line has also reduced processing loss by 20 percent and increased product added value by more than 30 percent. Four resident experts have helped solve more than 10 technical bottlenecks, enabling enterprises to build a complete processing chain covering fresh-keeping, prepared foods, and byproduct utilization.

Shengsi producers are also expanding sales channels through community group buying and e-commerce, enhancing market coverage and brand visibility.
