Competitions in vocational skills and rural vitalization in Guangdong province kicked off on Monday in Zhanjiang, a port city on the Leizhou Peninsula.

Organized by the Guangdong provincial government, the events aim to train workers to promote the rural economy and will last until early December.

More than 60 government departments, industrial associations and leading companies participated in the organization and implementation of the competitions, which include 141 events covering advanced manufacturing, strategic emerging industries and modern services and related industries - all of which play important roles in promoting the rural economy in the province, a major production base in China.

The competitions feature the most rigorous specifications, the largest scale and the widest influence in vocational skills to be held in Guangdong to date, according to organizers.

Forums, seminars and lectures will also be organized to help build a good platform for in-depth exchanges, discussions and cooperation between government departments, companies, universities and colleges to help promote employment in rural areas, they said.
