Called Mang in ancient times, the Naozhou Island is a volcanic island formed about 200,000-500,000 years ago. It is the biggest volcanic island in China.
Located about 40 kilometers north of Zhanjiang city, Guangdong province, it lies to the south of the Donghai Island, east of the Leizhou Bay, northwest of the South China Sea and east of the Pacific Ocean. The total area of the island is about 56 square kilometers.
The Naozhou Island is one of the "Eight Attractions in Zhanjiang".
The island boasts beautiful scenery and pleasant climate all the year round. There are quite a few places of historic interest and scenic beauty on the island. For example, the Nayanhai Rock Patch is a well-known tourist resort in South China, which boasts an ideal seaside bathing resort. The Naozhou Lighthouse, one of the three most famous lighthouses (the other two are the London Lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope Lighthouse).
Historical sites include the former site of the palace built during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the Xianglong Academy, the Bajiao Well, the Imperial Stele of the Song Dynasty, the Imperial Pavilion of the Song Dynasty, the Songhuang Village, the Chima Village and the tomb of Dou Zhenbiao and the Gongbao Archway.
The Naozhou Island is abundant in aquatic products. As a fertile fishing ground on the continental shelf in the South China Sea, it produces such world famous seafood as abalones and lobsters. Its southern scenery is well-known all over the world.
