Accelerating measures for household garbage sorting and disposal in rural areas can help improve the rural environment and enhance people's happiness in life, said Liu Xiaoquan, who is a deputy to the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) and a member of the CPC Wuliang Village Committee in Suixi county, Zhanjiang.
The central and local governments, as well as relevant functional departments, should issue policies and regulations on household garbage sorting in a timely manner to make rural garbage disposal more scientific, normative, and feasible, providing strong institutional support for it, said Liu.
"There is a certain gap between people's awareness of environmental protection and the requirements of rural garbage disposal in the new era, which is not conductive to the smooth development of garbage sorting policies," added Liu.
Therefore, relevant departments should increase publicity on environmental laws and regulations, as well as information regarding household garbage sorting and disposal to raise public awareness of environmental protection, said Liu.
Liu added that funding for sorting and treating rural household waste should also be increased, along with strengthening relevant infrastructure construction and further promoting its management level.
In addition, a market mechanism for rural household waste disposal should be developed and improved, noted Liu, who suggested encouraging social capital to improve operation efficiency, reduce costs, and raise the return on project investment through innovative management and technology.
