The first section of the water diversion project in Zhanjiang, which is being jointly constructed by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co Ltd and Sinohydro Foundation Engineering Co Ltd, started its pipe laying work on May 30.

The water diversion project will channel water from the Hedi Reservoir, which is in the north of the Leizhou Peninsula, to water works in the city's Chikan, Xiashan, and Mazhang districts, as well as Lianjiang and Suixi counties along the route.

The total length of the water conveyance lines is about 61.9 kilometers, with an estimated investment of 3.36 billion yuan ($472.35 million). The pipe network of the project's first section will have a length of about 20 km.

The project adopts groove welding to ensure the quality of pipeline welding and to guarantee that the acceptance rate exceeds 95 percent.
