Southern Medical University
Founded in 1951, Southern Medical University (SMU) was one of the first universities authorized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to pilot an eight-year medical education program and a national physician education and training program of excellence.

The university has 21 faculties offering 30 undergraduate programs, including seven national characteristic programs, 16 provincial characteristic programs, six provincial famous programs, and 20 national first-class discipline construction programs.
SMU boasts five national key disciplines, six key disciplines approved by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) and 10 provincial key disciplines. Nine disciplines of the university are shortlisted for the top 1 percent in the world, according to the Essential Science Indicators.
With 10 first-class doctoral programs, 16 first-class master’s programs, two professional doctoral programs, 14 professional master’s programs and eight post-doctoral research centers, SMU has formed a coordinated developing paradigm with medicine as the mainstay, and multiple disciplines including science, engineering, law, management and education supporting each other.
Currently, the university has 14,100 full-time undergraduate students, 7,692 graduate students and 1,012 international students.
SMU values international cooperation. It has established connections with 63 well-known universities, medical institutions and research institutions in 21 countries and regions in the world, winning 10 national teaching achievement awards and 41 provincial teaching achievement awards.
The university attaches great importance to faculty construction. At present, it employs 239 candidates for national talent projects and 354 candidates for provincial talent projects, including three academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, six double-employed academicians, three national teaching teams, four national famous teachers, 15 national high-level overseas talents, 21 Changjiang scholars, 19 national distinguished young scholars, 12 talents included in the National High-Level Special Support Program (with 3 young top-notch talents included), 20 candidates shortlisted for the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, six young and middle-aged leading talents in science and technology innovation approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and 13 national outstanding scholars.
SMU has 93 scientific and technological research platforms, including national key laboratories and national research centers for clinic medicine, two innovation teams in key fields approved by the MOST, two innovation teams approved by the MOE and one creative research group supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
With strong research capabilities, the university has won 18 national awards for natural sciences, technological inventions and science and technology progress, ranking first among colleges and universities in Guangdong province.
At present, SMU owns 13 affiliated hospitals with 17 national key clinical specialties, four key specialties and diseases of the SATCM, 60 provincial key clinical specialties, 35 high-level provincial key clinical specialties and 13 provincial medical quality control centers, offering annual diagnosis and treatment of more than 15 million patients.
