Baiyun District Folk Culture Museum
Pinghe Pawnshop was founded by shareholders including Huang Runhe, Li Luozong, Yuan Ziwen and Huang Yicai in 1917. Costing 30,000 taels of silver and using 180,000 blue bricks, it was once known as the most luxurious pawnshop in Guangzhou. It is also the most complete and largest pawnshop site in Guangdong province.
The pawnshop was discovered during Guangzhou’s fourth cultural relics survey in 2003, and was rated as one of the city’s cultural relics protection sites in December 2008.
Highlighting the protection and utilization of historical and cultural heritage, the CPC Baiyun district committee and the district government invested nearly 10 million yuan ($1.47 million) in renovating the Pinghe Pawnshop site. In June 2012, it was launched as the Baiyun District Folk Culture Museum.
In April 2019, the pawnshop was ungraded into a cultural relic site under the provincial level protection.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the site was nationalized and used as Junhe’s grain and oil purchase and sales station for a long time.
