The south section of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport's second expressway project has recently made breakthroughs, local media outlets reported on Mar 8. The project's pavement works will soon enter the asphalt construction stage.

Invested and constructed by Guangzhou Communications Investment Group, the project is the second expressway that will connect downtown Guangzhou with the airport by passing through Huadu, Baiyun, Huangpu and Tianhe districts.

With a total investment of about 20.2 billion yuan ($3 billion), the dual-way expressway will have a total length of about 46.07 kilometers, and a designated speed of 100 km per hour. Its south section is expected to be completed and opened to traffic within the year.

Upon the south section's completion, it will connect the expressway's north section to seven other expressways. It is significant for the transportation network in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In addition, the travel time between Tianhe district and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport will be reduced from one hour to only 30 minutes.
