History of administrative divisions in Baiyun
In May 1988, Guangyuan, Jingtai, Yunyuan and other new residential areas were withdrawn from Sanyuanli sub-district to establish Jingtai sub-district. In November, Kuangjiazhuang, Cenjing, Xincun, Jiucun, Sanxiang and other villages were separated from Shenshan township to establish Yayao township.
In January 1989, Songzhou sub-district was set up by taking in Luochong, Songnan, Songbei, Hesha and Tanwei areas from Shijing township.
On Nov 18, 1994, Tongde sub-district was established by incorporating Tongde village and newly -built large-scale residential areas.
On April 14, 1995, Liangtian township was set up by taking in Liangtian, Baisha, Jinpen, Guangming, Chendong, Huakeng, Anping, Shatian and other administrative villages from Zhuliao township.
In June 2000, several villages were separated from Xinshi township to build Tangjing, Xinjing and Huangshi sub-districts.
In June 2001, Tonghe township was divided into Tonghe, Jingxi and Yongping sub-districts.
In October 2001, Xijiao, Hesha and Tanwei villages of Shijing township were incorporated into Liwan district.
In April 2002, Xinshi and Shijing townships were changed into Jiahe and Shijing sub-districts respectively. In July, Chalong, Mawu and Xiaoping villages were separated from Shijing sub-district and included by Songzhou, Huangshi and Xinjing sub-districts. Part of Jiahe and Shijing sub-districts were separated to establish Junhe and Jinsha sub-districts. Badou village in Luogang township was embraced by Taihe township; Yayao and Banghu townships in Baiyun were transferred into Huadu district and Renhe township.
In March 2003, Luogang township was upgraded into Luogang sub-district. On June 28, Xinjing sub-district was renamed Xinshi. On Dec 19, Badou village in Taihe township was put under the management of the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone.
On June 7, 2004, Shenshan and Jianggao townships were incorporated into Jianggao, and Taihe and Longgui townships into Taihe. Liangtian, Zhuliao and Jiufo townships were merged into Zhongluotan township.
On April 28, 2005, Kuangquan sub-district in Baiyun district was put under the jurisdiction of Yuexiu; Luogang sub-district in Baiyun district, Jiufo and Suibei neighborhood committees in Zhongluotan township and 14 villages, including Hongwei, Fengwei, Puxin, Xiezhuang, Fengxia, Folang, Yantang, Liantang, Shanlong, Chonggang, Huangtian, Hetangxia, Jingxia and Changgeng were put under Luogang district’s administration.
In December 2013, four sub-districts were set up in Baiyun. Yuncheng sub-district was separated from Xinshi sub-district; Baiyunhu and Shimen sub-districts were spilt from Shijing sub-district; and Helong sub-district comprises part of Junhe and Jiahe sub-districts.
On Feb 28, 2014, offices of the four newly established sub-districts were inaugurated.
On July 1, 2020, Baiyun ushered in its administrative division adjustment. Longgui and Dayuan sub-districts were split from Taihe township. Longgui sub-district governs six communities such as Longgui and Longyue and seven villages such as Yongxing and Nancun. Dayuan sub-district administrates Dayuan, Shihu, and Milong villages, as well as Yuanshan, Lanshan and Fuyuan communities.
By November 2021, Baiyun district has jurisdiction over 20 administrative sub-districts and four townships. They are Sanyuanli, Songzhou, Jingtai, Huangshi, Tongde, Tangjing, Xinshi, Tonghe, Jingxi, Yongping, Jiahe, Junhe, Shijing, Jinsha, Yuncheng, Helong, Baiyunhu, Shimen, Longgui and Dayuan sub-districts, and Renhe, Taihe, Zhongluotan and Jianggao townships. There are 284 residents’ committees and 118 villagers' committees in Baiyun. The district government is located at No 238 Guangyuan Central Road.
