Athlete from Baiyun clinches silver at Paris Olympics
On Aug 4, the Chinese badminton men's doubles team, comprising Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, secured a silver medal at Paris Olympics.
Liang, born in 2000, hails from Tangjing street, Baiyun district, Guangzhou. His early interest in badminton was nurtured by his parents, who enrolled him in a sports school at the age of six. Under the guidance of coach Xu Weiwen at the Guangzhou Gymnasium, Liang's talent and passion for the sport flourished.
Liang faced numerous challenges throughout his career, including setbacks due to his height and weight. However, his father's unwavering support, relentless determination, and rigorous training helped him overcome these obstacles.
Since 2022, the duo has rapidly ascended the international rankings, achieving the world number one spot within 16 months. Their notable victories include winning the men's doubles title at the 2024 Indonesia Badminton Open and contributing to China's triumph at the 2023 Sudirman Cup.
Liang's journey from a local athlete to an Olympic silver medalist is a testament to his hard work and dedication. As Liang continues to excel, his hometown of Baiyun proudly celebrates his achievements and looks forward to his future successes.
