Report says Baiyun excels in ecosystem
Baiyun district was recently recognized as "excellent" in the 2023 Environmental Protection Goal Responsibility Assessment by the Guangzhou municipal ecological environment protection committee office.
This marked the third consecutive year that Baiyun has received the accolade.
In recent years, significant investments have been made in the district in water management – with over 48.6 billion yuan ($6.93 billion) allocated since the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20).
What's more, all primary tributaries in key watersheds have met quality standards for four consecutive years. Air quality has also improved, with major pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10 consistently meeting national standards.
Baiyun ranked first in Guangzhou for air quality improvement from January to August 2024.
Efforts in soil management are said to have ensured the safe use of contaminated farmland and construction land, with zero soil pollution incidents reported.
Baiyun's "Zero Waste City" initiative has seen the successful cultivation of 379 "Zero Waste Cells" and 100 percent of rural household waste is now being safely disposed of.
The district has also excelled in green and beautiful ecological construction, enhancing 521.7 hectares of forest and creating new ecological corridors and greenways.
Technological advancements include developing "Smart Environmental Protection" and "Smart Urban Management" systems.
Baiyun's achievements in environmental protection are driving high-quality development, with a GDP growth of 6.3 percent in the first half of 2024.
Baiyun is committed to further improving its ecological environment.
