Guangdong recently announced the proposed list of provincial university science and technology parks to be recognized for 2023, local media outlets reported on Jan 17.

The Science and Technology Park of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) in Nansha was included in the list. This marks the birth of Guangdong's first university science and technology park, which has the characteristics of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cooperation in Nansha district.

University sci-tech parks are essential for universities to provide high-tech enterprise incubation services, cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial talents, and transfer and transform scientific and technological achievements.

HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute operates the sci-tech park. It is one of the crucial measures to support the construction and development of HKUST (Guangzhou) in Nansha and to strengthen the school's basic and applied research.

The HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute was funded and established by the Fok Ying Tung Foundation. It settled in Nansha in January 2007.

It is the most important platform for innovative technology research and achievement transformation for HKUST in the Chinese mainland. It is also the first Hong Kong-based research institution in Guangzhou and one of the first new research and development institutions in Guangdong province.

The institute has provided vital technology breakthroughs and optimization services for more than 300 well-known global enterprises, universities, and research institutes.

It has accumulated over 910 research projects at all levels, driving a total investment of over 1.6 billion yuan (222 million) in research projects. It is worth mentioning that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (International) Youth Entrepreneur Hub and the Nansha sub-center of the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou are both operated by the institute.
