Legal Aid
A criminal suspect or defendant of foreign nationality in China may file for legal aid. A victim of foreign nationality in a public prosecution case;, a plaintiff of foreign nationality in a private prosecution case, or a foreign national who has evidence to prove that his or her legitimate rights and interests have been infringed upon may file for legal aid with a local legal aid institution in the city where the judicial authority which has jurisdiction over the case is located, and is allowed provided that he or she cannot afford counsel.
To apply for legal aid, the following documents should be furnished:
1. Passport or other valid identity papers, and the power of attorney document/s of the agent ad litem if any;
2. Documentary proof of financial difficulty;
3. Documents on the case for which legal aid is sought.
