Guangzhou's Tianhe district saw a vibrant and busy start to 2026, with commercial areas across the district experiencing a significant rise in both visitor numbers and sales during the New Year holiday.

The Tianhe Road Business Circle, the district's core retail hub, recorded over 5.5 million visits, an increase of 19 percent compared to the same period last year, while sales rose 17.33 percent to over 260 million yuan ($37 million). Major shopping centers contributed strongly to this performance. Grandview Plaza's New Year events led to a 92 percent surge in visitor traffic, while Teemall doubled its holiday footfall with immersive winter-themed installations. The OneLink Walk shopping center also attracted crowds by blending street culture with traditional celebrations.

Consumer promotions and national policy support further fueled spending. Guangzhou Modern Department Store's campaign contributed to a 30 percent rise in both visitors and sales, while newly implemented national trade-in subsidies boosted electronics and appliance purchases. Cooperation between banks and merchants led to additional payment discounts, enhancing the shopping experience.

Tianhe's strategy of combining cultural, commercial, and recreational elements, including new store openings, themed events, and immersive activities, effectively engaged a wide range of consumers. Looking ahead, Tianhe is committed to enhancing its role as a top shopping and lifestyle destination, focusing on expanding its retail mix and elevating the overall visitor experience.
