Ding'an county is located in the central part of Hainan island, neighboring Wenchang city in the east, Chengmai county in the west, Qionghai city in the southeast, Tunchang county in the southwest, and facing the Qiongshan district of Haikou city across the Nandu River.
It measures 45.5 kilometers from east to west and 68 km from north to south with a border of 251.5 km.

The county covers an area of 1,177.7 square kilometers and is a multi-ethnic county, home to ethnic groups such as the Han, Miao, Li, Hui, Bouyei, Manchu, Dong, Yao, Tujia and Gelao. The Han and Miao people are the natives. The ethnic minority groups, except for the Miao, mainly live in three State farms.
Ding'an is a county of tranquil beauty. Tourists can relax themselves by wandering in the woods, enjoying Asia's only cold spring in tropical areas, having fun at Nanli Lake National Wetland Park, climbing the Wenbi Peak and visiting beautiful ancient towns and villages.
Other tourism resources and attractions in Ding'an include the Taoism Cultural Tourism Zone in Wenbi Mountain, Hainan Tropical Bird World, Dingyang Ancient Town, Jianlong Tower, Taishi Torii, Bajiao Palace, the former residence of Zhang Yuesong, known as one of the four talented scholars of Hainan province in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and a memorial park in the Murui Mountain Revolutionary Base Area. Many ancient buildings and revolutionary relics have been put under province and county-level protection.
In ancient times, Ding'an was the birthplace of many greatest minds and outstanding talents. During Chinese Civil War period, Dingan has played a pivotal role in the Landing Operation on Hainan Island. Nowadays, Dingan is recognized as the origin of Hainan opera.

In 2022, the annual regional GDP in Ding'an was 12.29 billion yuan ($1.78 billion), a year-on-year increase of 0.1 percent.
