“I proposed in the sky,” said a bridegroom excitedly at the 2017 World Fly-in Expo held in Wuhan, China's Hubei province, on Nov 6.

Li Pengyun, the bridegroom, shared his experience at a news conference after a grand balloon-based group wedding ceremony at the Hannan General Aviation Airport.

“I want to express my gratitude to my parents, especially my father, and to my new wife for her great support,” said the young man, who works as a teacher.

“Since my father is a graduate of Beihang University (BUAA) and has always dreamt about flying in the sky, he thinks my balloon wedding is a great idea,” he explained.

Founded in 1952, BUAA was established as a merger of the aeronautical departments of eight top Chinese universities.

“I feel excited because we had such a great and romantic moment,” said the bride Jiang Keyu.

“My husband’s first name is Pengyun. Both characters have something to do with the sky. So I feel great to have a balloon wedding.” added Jiang.

Altogether, 100 couples had a group balloon wedding ceremony at the expo, each one riding a balloon up into the sky, which sets a new record in China.

Thousands of spectators watched the ceremony and wished the couples happy lives together.
