Nanyang is the biggest agricultural city in Henan province, with the largest land area and the most population. It is the national production area of grain, cotton, oil and cigarettes. Its six counties are the national bases of commodity grain and cotton, and three of those counties are the national bases of high quality cotton. Nanyang's yellow cattle heads the list of the national top five superior cattle, "Nanyang black pig" enjoys a good reputation in the whole province, and Nanyang tussah ranks first in Henan province.

Nanyang has abundant resources of forest, fruit, medicine and native products, including over 30 kinds of wood materials like pine, China fir, paulownia and so on. Over 20 kinds of economic trees such as the apple, kiwi fruit, orange, date, Chinese chestnut, tung oil tree, raw lacquer, gingko and so on make up the forest. Also, there are eight rare substances of traditional Chinese medicine found here, which include cornel, magnolia flower, Eucommia ulmoides, Platycodon grandiflorum, the root of red-rooted salvia, Pinellia ternata, scorpion and blood amber. There have been 16 nuisance free agricultural product bases placed in the whole city.

In 2013, the area of food crops was 1,177,920 hectares (11.8 billion square meters), an increase of 1.4 percent compared to 2012. Among this, the area of wheat was 672,350 hectares, an increase of 0.5 percent from a year earlier; the area of cotton was 35,040 hectares, a decrease of 26.0 percent from a year earlier; the area of oil plants was 323,200 hectares, an increase of 1.0 percent from a year earlier; and the area of vegetables was 247,120 hectares, a decrease of 1.2 percent from a year earlier.

The output of grain for the whole year was 6.17 million tons, an increase of 0.9 percent compared to the previous year; the cotton made up for 33,600 tons, a decrease of 24.9 percent; the oil plants 1,269.9 tons, an increase of 3.4 percent; vegetables 10.07 tons, an increase of 1.5 percent; meat 742,600 tons, an increase of 3.0 percent; poultry and eggs 341,000 tons, an increase of 1.6 percent; and milk production 257,200 tons, an increase of 0.1 percent.

At the end of 2013, the total power of agricultural machinery was 13,078.5 KW, rising 4.4 percent from a year earlier; the number of agrimotor sets was 120,000, rising 28 percent; the agricultural vehicle was 74,800, rising 1.2 percent; fertilizer input had a net value of 871.2 tons, dropping 0.1 percent; and the rural power consumption was 1.99 billion KWH, rising 3.8 percent.
